This Surinam-Amsterdam jazz café has been in existence since the thirties and still seems, despite some restoration, to be a bit chaotic—just as a good jazz café should be. Sit back and listen or join in and dance to live jazz.

Production of The Cotton Club Theatricalia

The Cotton Club had a reputation for catapulting famous careers, but history has a way of glossing over the cabaret's social transgressions. If there was a staple of Harlem nightlife in the 1920s and 30s, it was the Cotton Club. Boasting some of the era's most talented performers, the entertainment venue and speakeasy remains an icon of New York City even today.

Cotton Club 2020, "September" YouTube

Perhaps more than a fancy venue of the 1920s, the Cotton Club was a big piece of American history. The Cotton Club was built during the Harlem Renaissance, which, as History reports, saw an unprecedented blossoming of African-American art and culture, and an assertion of confidence and independence from white patriarchy. So the club's whites-only policy stood in stark contrast to its location.

Cotton Club

The Cotton Club was a New York City nightclub from 1923 to 1940. It was located on 142nd Street and Lenox Avenue (1923-1936), then briefly in the midtown Theater District (1936-1940). [1] The club operated during the United States' era of Prohibition and Jim Crow era racial segregation.

This is a laid-back, casual place, good for people-watching, mainly patronised by locals (including a smattering of elderly hipsters who all seem to know each other.) Worth seeking out on a Saturday if you're a jazz fan, or dropping in if you happen to be in the Nieuwmarkt area. Written 21 September 2016.
